What each accessory is called in the US

in-lite parts carry brand names. The US landscape lighting trade has its own words for the same things, so here is the translation.

CONTROL GLARE AND SHAPE THE BEAM

Glare is the most common thing people want to fix after an installation is finished, and it is almost never solved by turning the light down. It is solved by changing what you can see of the source. Three tools do that, and they do different jobs.

Honeycomb louvers

KILLFLASH sits over the lens as a fine honeycomb grid. Light passes straight through it, but the reflection off the lens does not, so the fixture stops reading as a bright dot from across the yard. Use it where people will look toward the fixture: seating areas, dining tables, anywhere a spotlight faces back at the house.

Snoots and shutters

SHUTTER 1 and SHUTTER 2 narrow the beam to a set width. Use them where the light is landing somewhere you do not want it: spilling past a wall, crossing a property line, catching a window. A snoot is the right tool when the problem is the shape of the beam rather than the brightness of the source.

Shrouds and lens caps

SHIELD blocks the view of the LED from one direction while leaving the beam intact, and WINK covers part of the lens to the same end. These suit a fixture mounted at or near eye level, where the beam is doing its job but the source itself is uncomfortable to walk past.

MOUNT A FIXTURE WHERE THERE IS NOTHING TO MOUNT TO

Not every spot in a yard has a wall, a post or a slab to fix to. These parts cover the rest.

Above planting

RISER 1 and RISER 2 lift a SCOPE spotlight clear of what is growing around it. A fixture at ground level in a border disappears by midsummer; on a riser it keeps its aim and its throw. RISER 2 adjusts between 35 and 53 cm (14 and 21 in).

BRACE and BRACE BAND fix a spotlight to a trunk or a heavy branch, which is how you light a seating area under a canopy when there is no wall or ceiling above it. Mounted high and aimed down, a tree-mounted spot gives dappled light through the branches. Check the fixing once a season and loosen it as the trunk thickens, the way you would with any strap around living wood.

On a wall with no junction box

FIT is a mounting plate for the outdoor wall lights. It gives you a flat, solid fixing on a surface that has no outdoor box behind it, which is the normal situation on a fence panel, a garden wall or a post.

EXTEND, SPLIT AND PROTECT THE CABLE

The cable is where most installation questions actually come from, and it is the part of the range this page currently says nothing about.

Feeding more than one fixture from one point. SPLITTER takes one cable point and turns it into two; SPLITTER TRIPLE feeds three. Use one where several fixtures sit close together, such as a group of recessed lights in a deck or three spots along one bed, so you run one cable to the group instead of three back to the transformer.

Reaching further. Extension cords add length to a run without cutting or splicing anything. Because the system uses EASY-LOCK connectors, extending is a matter of plugging in rather than stripping wire, which is also why a run can be lengthened years later without disturbing what is already installed. Wet locations. WATERLOCK seals a connection where it will sit in or near water: a pond edge, a fountain surround, a low spot that holds water after rain. Use it wherever a connection could end up submerged rather than merely rained on.

CHANGE HOW A FIXTURE LOOKS

Cover plates change a round recessed light into a square one. PLATE 1 fits the 60 mm (2.36 in) recessed lights and comes in Black, Stainless Steel and Pearl Grey, so the face can either match the paving it sits in or read as a deliberate detail against it. Square plates suit a squared-off deck or a formal terrace; round faces suit gravel, planting and informal paving.

Caps do the same job on the path lights. MINI SWAY CAP finishes the top of a MINI SWAY, changing how much light goes up and how the fixture reads by day.

FAQ

How do I know which accessory fits my fixture? Accessories are made for specific fixture families, and the product name usually says which: SHIELD 2 and KILLFLASH 2 belong to SCOPE, FIX 3 to EVO HYDE, MINI SWAY CAP to MINI SWAY. On this page, the filters narrow the range to the accessories that fit what you have. If you are unsure, an in-lite dealer can confirm before you order.

Can I add accessories to fixtures I have already installed? Yes, that is what most of them are for. Glare guards, snoots, shrouds and cover plates all go on a fixture that is already in place, which is why they are usually bought after a first evening with the lights on rather than at the same time as the fixtures. Cable parts such as splitters and extension cords also connect to a run that is already in the ground.

How do I connect more than one fixture to a single point on the cable? Use a splitter. SPLITTER takes one point on the cable and turns it into two; SPLITTER TRIPLE feeds three fixtures from one point. It saves running a separate cable back to the transformer for each fixture, and it keeps a group of lights that sit close together on one branch of the system.

Which accessories do I need for a pond or another wet location? WATERLOCK seals a connection that will sit in or near water. Standard connections in the in-lite system are made for outdoor use, but a connection that could end up submerged, in a pond, a water feature or a low spot that floods, needs a waterproof connector rather than a weatherproof one.

Will mounting a spotlight on a tree damage the tree? Not if you fit it properly and check it. BRACE and BRACE BAND wrap the trunk rather than screwing into it, which avoids a wound in the bark. The thing to watch is growth: a band left untouched for years can begin to constrict a trunk as it thickens. Check the fixing once a season and loosen it when it starts to tighten.

Do in-lite accessories fit fixtures from other brands? They are designed for in-lite housings and the in-lite EASY-LOCK connector system, so fit is not something we can promise on another manufacturer's fixture. Diameters, mounting points and connectors all differ between brands. If you are combining systems, check with an in-lite dealer first.
